Two Modes of Audio Learning
Active Listening
When: New material, complex concepts, first exposure
- Full attention, no distractions
- Pause frequently to process
- Summarize sections out loud
- Take notes or mental notes
Speed: 1.0x or 1.25x maximum
Passive Listening
When: Review, reinforcement, familiar material
- Background listening during activities
- Let information wash over you
- Occasional attention without full focus
Speed: 1.5x-2.0x for familiar content
The Progression
| Exposure | Mode | Purpose |
|---|---|---|
| 1st | Active | Initial encoding |
| 2nd-3rd | Passive | Reinforcement |
| 4th+ | Passive (fast) | Maintenance |
| Pre-exam | Active | Consolidation |
Common Mistakes
- Passive listening to new material (ineffective)
- Active listening to everything (exhausting)
- Never transitioning from active to passive
